Hello

Am having a problem with the USB dongle on my laptop. This is the only way I can connect wireless as the wireless card isn't working and I ain't sure how to install one.

The dongle seems a little loose and I've tried using it in various usb ports but it still disconnects quite often.

Is it just a matter of buying another one now as it's had it's day or any other usb dongles I can purchase that would be better to connect wireless with?

Thanks alot.

Yeah it's a real pain. I must have got disconnected about 50 times today.

A work colleague has told me he can install a wireless card for me as the one in it isn't working. Could anyone advise me which one to buy? My laptop is a Tecra M1. :o

Is windows saying the usb device is removed or is it only losing the wireless signal? My sister's PC was always losing the connection on XP but upgraded to W7 and it stays rock solid - also no issues with Ubuntu.

It's losing the wireless signal - if I move the laptop any way I lose the signal and the dongle seems loose on it.

Will maybe try another PC then - ive tried the other usb ports on the laptop but it loses the signal as well.
  • This would indicate a very poor signal, move the access point (eg wireless router) and dongle closer together, or position them so there are less obstacles.

Tried this Timothy and still same problem. Seems to be a problem with the Dongle itself - if I lift/move the laptop the connection goes - will just purchase a wireless card and hopefully that helps :o can anyone recommend any?

Easy way to test if it's software is download Ubuntu and run it straight off a CD (free and no need to install).

Honestly I've no idea what was going on with our XP machine, it did not seem at all like software was the problem but none the less that is what fixed it.

    Hi

Buy yourself a 5m USB extension cable from Ebay or somewhere. Use it to reposition the dongle in different parts of the room - you'd be surpirsed what a difference this makes.
