The output from your laptop will be VGA, SVGA or USB.

To the TV, I imagine it will be Scart or HDMI (or maybe USB).

I use VGA to Scart, press the Fn button and F8 and there we have it...un-ratioed photo's on my TV (because the graphics card on this is pooh!).

Think this is ok to look at pics but not watch films as it doesnt do audio :(

The one problem you get is the aspect ratio when connecting a laptop to TV for watching films. You would need a good quality card to get good quality on a TV. My TV is 1080p...laptop only goes up to 800...so the stretch one way doesn't stretch the other way.

For audio, you need a couple of audio cables or and S-video cable...or, if you have loads of cables already, some convertor connection sockets are the better solution for that matter. However, the more cable and connections, the poorer the quality.
  • I was in a similar quandary a year or so ago when choosing cables to connect my laptop to my TV. The general consensus I found was gold connectors aren't worth it and in fact silver conducts better than gold. VGA cables are better than S-Video. Don't buy anything longer than you need.

In the end I choose the following and I must say they're as good as the reviews - they're perfect.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fisual-Pearl-VGA-Male-Cable/dp/B000WTT0EG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1240134161&sr=8-1
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fisual-Install-3-5mm-Stereo-Cable/dp/B0012IRLTW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1240134167&sr=8-1

I appreciate it looks like I'm going back on my gold comment but after reading the reviews for both cables I was happy to pick these.

It looks as though you're laptop has a VGA port however your TV doesn't so if you wanted to connect it with your current TV, as others have said, you'll need a VGA to SCART connector. What's the point though if you're getting a new TV soon anyway...

The reason for using gold plating on connectors is nothing to do with its conductivity. You correctly state that gold is not as good as silver (or copper for that matter) at conducting electricity. The advantage of gold is that it doers not form oxides at the surface layers unlike copper or silver. Surface oxides will reduce the conductivity of a connector

You cant just change from one format to another and expect it to work (Which that clearly doesnt)

Its tecnically possible, but the lead generally needs the 'blanking switch' to work (tells the tv its in RGB ~ no clue if that one you posted does or not, but I suspect it doesnt) and certain software needs to run to get everything working correctly
