My own paeonies are a right pain! :D

They have a short flowering period. They look spectacular but the flowers are too heavy for the stems and they keel over. I have to remember to surround them with twiggy sticks in early spring so that they can be supported. If I forget (like this year :o) then they flop over. They are supposed to be an ideal cut flower but there's no way on earth that the blooms can support themselves. It's very unlikely that there will be any new buds once the flowering ones have been cut.

I just accept it for what it is - a showy, short-lived flower that won't behave itself and needs a lot of propping up.

I think your paeonies have just come to the end of their flowering season - but I could be wrong. In the north-west, where I live, the buds have still to break open - it may take a few more days. Do you live in the south, by any chance?

I saw a tree peony other day cant believe how big it was its just down road from me must be at least 8 foot tall
  • It's a strange plant isn't it....didn't even know we had one mind, it just popped up in the corner of the garden of the new house and I thought it was rhubarb at first with a brussel sprout on top :rotfl::rotfl: :o

The flower head was touching the floor so propped it up with cane and twine, even that was difficult.

Noticed it was on the floor again keeling over and groaning with it's own weight and went out and noticed it was shedding.

Kay, I am in the West Mids, the flower head burst open about 4 weeks ago, a very welcome flush of colour, albeit I know now short lived. A lot of the neighbours have got the same peony it looks, must have been passing them round!

Incidentally I planted 2 tree peonies last week, I hope they are successful.

  • "Discard of the dead peony flower in a garbage bag. It isn't a good idea to make a habit of composting dead flowers because the seeds may develop and instead of distributing compost in your garden, you could be spreading more peony plants to unwanted areas of your flowerbed or garden" - I would actually like to create more, might I be able to create more by using the seeds? Sorry am a first year gardener ;)

I have moved a peony today and I am praying it doesnt die! It had to be moved due to renovations but I wanted to give it a chance rather than throw it on the skip. I remember someone telling me they dont like being moved but this one has 2 chances.

We were told they don`t like to be moved as well. However, when we moved in here twenty years ago we had to move one from the front garden to the back to do some renovations. Two years later we moved it back to the front garden in a different spot and it is now about 3 feet across and has 16 flowerheads this year.

    Hope you are as lucky.

Sorry OP - meant to say that although peonies are stunning flowers, in my experience they are short lived so don`t think you will get another flush of flowering.

My parents have a gorgeous peony and unfortunately it is short lived.
The flowers get bigger every year and more buds develop every year but they weigh so much it hangs right down over a path way and they lose petals very quickly.
Rain and wind dont help at all and this weekend my father removed the lost flowers - now only 2 remaining out of 24!!

Supports failed to help this year so i`m wondering whether a obeslick may be better next year.
