help pc does not recognise phone usb device

I have a nokia 6020 and have bought a usb mobile to computer CA-42 cable.I have installed the driver disk provided yet when i try to connect my phone it says the following "one of the usb devices attached to the computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognise it".
Is the cable faulty. I have tried the troubleshooting methods and i am lost what to do next except return it.
it shows on device manager as an unknown device and no driver has been installed.
Please can you help.

Thank you

Louise

Well it sounds like you have not successfully installed the necessary device driver. Can you not try to install the driver in device manager? Is there an option to update etc. and then navigate to the driver on the disk provided.

    thanks for your reply

i go into device manager i click on unknown device properties

status :No drivers are installed for this device.

device usage :use this device enable

driver details :no driver files are required or have been loaded for this device

upate driver: install from list or specific location

i can either search from driver off floppy or in a certain folder
or dont search choose driver from a list

either wizard cannot continue the hardware update as it cant find a better match

You need to navigate to the location of the driver i.e. locate the driver directory on the floppy or CD provided, as in the "in a certain folder" above

    Hi,

Are you running windows XP? if so you do not normally need to use the cd drivers, they are for win98/me.

Delete/uninstall the drivers and let XP use it's own, it should find them automatically when you plug the phone in, if not use the add/remove hardware in control panel.

To get the best out of your phone you should install the Nokia PC Suite, this may have come on a cd with your phone, if not loads of people have it or I think you can download it.

You then just drag and drop things in and out of your phone.

nokia phones do require specific drivers, these are installed with the pc suite often though.
