British Gas EnergySmart.. is it worth it?

Hi, having just had a very high 4th quarter bill from BG (dual fuel), I was looking into getting one of their EnergySmart gadgets and would appreciate any comments from people that are using it at the moment.

We are currently on BG's WebSaver3 tariff which cannot be used with EnergySmart (which doesn't seem particularly fair - they'll help you save money, but not if your on their best-rate tariff). In order to get EnergySmart we would have to sign up to another tariff and have looked at OnlineSaver2.

I did some rough calculations (they don't make it easy to compare, do they!?) and worked out that OS2 would have cost us around £30 more than WS3 over the last quarter. We were wondering whether the EnergySmart system would enable us to save at least this amount by showing us where we were wasting energy.

Also, I have noticed that BG's WebSaver tariff is now on version 7. When we were with Eon, if they changed the tariff 'version' they would inform us and give us the option of switching to the new version. BG don't seem to do this and I worked out that WS7 would have saved us around £12 on our last bill over WS3. Does anyone know if you can opt to change 'version' automatically or is this just something I have to keep on top of?

Sorry I thanked you instead of replying. With all the Tariff changes you have to keep on top of them yourself. The latest 2 are Online saver 4 and Websaver 7. You can use Energysmart with the Online saver.

If there is such a difference from the tariff you are on I would suggest buying an Energy monitor ( around £25) and check your reads monthly to work out how much your consumption drops but to also stay on your current Tariff.

I was on Fixed price 2010 with which I used the Energysmart for a few months. It was good to be able to see your bills monthly but when my Tariff ended I did my homework and decided I would make more savings on the Websaver 7 than the other plans so went for this.

Some one previously posted this website which you can put your reads and tariff into and it will tell you how much the bill is s I use this to replace the Energy smart part.http://smartmeter.ukpower.co.uk/
