a surfeit of vodka!

After clearing out my cupboards, I have found a couple of unopened bottles of vodka. I'm not a great drinker of the stuff myself, so was wondering what I could do with the it. We're going to a BBQ in a couple of weeks, so I thought I could do vodka jellies and/or flavoured vodka (e.g. butterscotch).

Does anyone:
1. know good tried & tested recipes for these please ?
2. have any other ideas what I could do with the stuff ?

I did consider leaving it for another 6 months & going "Bottom-style" with vodka margerine, but didn't think it would go down too well with the family :D:D:D

Seriously I know that James Wong (Grow your own Drugs) uses a lot of vodka for making home made remedies
It is very good as a foot soak because it has anti fungal properties.

This site has a lovely raspberry vodka recipe that I have made and can definately vouch for :D hic :p

I went to a party once where they had vodka melon balls, I think they just made a hole in the side of a watermelon and kepy topping it up with vodka for a few days, then cut open on the day and made into the balls and then chilled them..

oranges, vodka, medical syringe - excellent

oh the nostalgia of a mis-spent youth!

I made the toffee vodka for my daughter (that sounds odd, but she is 25!) liquidised a back of hard toffees - werther's original - took some vodka out of the bottle, fed in the shards of toffee (used paper rolled up as a funnel). Left it for several weeks, turning upside/downside every day.

I have made lemon vodka using an enormous Sorrento lemon. I lightly peeled the lemon and stuffed the peel into a bottle with a bit of sugar and left it in the dark for 6 months shaking it every now and again.
    It was fantastic stuff!

I have done this and also skittles vodka (don't use the green ones) and they turned out delicious!!

If you dont want to wait weeks, you can do as I did and wrap a towel around the bottles and put them in the DW on hottest setting, they were done after 2 rounds in there.

If you aren't much of a drinker but if you like cooking from scratch then I'd use them to make vanilla extract. It'll cost a fraction of what shop bought vanilla extract does, and I prefer the taste.

Get some vanilla pods off a seller called vanilla.mart on Ebay, AFAIK they specialise in importing them, they are fresher than shop bought ones and a fraction of the price. If you are patient and wait for an auction you can probably get 10 pods for £2!

I use about 200ml of vodka at a time...there's no point in making 700ml at a time unless you are baking every single day :) Basically cut up about 3 pods into inch long pieces using scissors, put into around 200ml of vodka (it's not an exact science) and leave for a month. It should get darker with time, use it when you want and leave the pods in.

The spare pods will keep quite a while in a sealed bag so make another batch as and when.

It's so easy I would never pay the silly prices charge for vanilla extract in shops.

mix vodka with a little bloody mary mix and inject into the heart of cherry tomatoes (having sucked some of the juice out of them first with your syringe)

    chill them

last year i made toffee vodka for christmas presents and it went down a storm
    like Dooleys?
    i used werthers originals

i got a big bottle of vodka and took some out (shaking room)
i got loads of werthers, put them in a bag, and smashed with a rolling pin, fed them into the bottle, and shook it every day
after about a week it was done
i did find however stashing it in the freezer (vodka doesnt freeze) that it made it nice & thick like dooleys

with hindsight i would use smaller bottles
i ended up with muscles like popeye shaking the hooge one:rotfl:

Crikey ! so many excellent ideas - thankyou all so much !

I'll definitely be doing the toffee & lemon vodkas & will remember to decant into smaller bottles - would jam jars be a good idea do you think? Kevins idea to spped up the process was genius!

Weezl's idea I might try at my next BBQ - they should make interesting amuse bouche :p

Sarah - I think I remember someone doing something like that ! was it Jamie O? I would be doing that for the BBQ too, but I loathe melon in all forms :( and I'm not that altruistic to make something that I hate :) Might do it for mum though thinking about it as she loves melon. Hmmmmm

BB - I had a look at the link - some interesting recipes there! One that did catch my eye was the pasta with tomato vodka sauce - will be trying that one for sure. The raspberry vodka will be made this summer as we're taking our little niece out fruit picking & I think it could make lovely christmas presents

And PaulWF, vanilla extract?! genius ! I've found the seller you recommended & have now bought some pods so will be making some extract as soon as they arrive. I love baking, and hubby makes divine chocolate brownies that need it in, so that will be very useful. How long do you think it will keep for do you think?

Thankyou all so much once again for so many brilliant ideas _ I think I'm going to try them all !!!

    Hi Liz :D

Loads of ideas to keep you going already! I can also vouch for skittles vodka - leaving out the green ones! You could make some now for Christmas. The vanilla extract sounds interesting, let us know how that goes!

There's a couple of threads which may offer you some ideas

Flavoured vodka and other alcoholic drinks

Vodka jelly, how the dickens do you make it?

Toffee vodka - sterile bottles? (interesting thread with other ideas)

    PLum vodka

Turning cheap vodka into expensive tasting vodka

Have a read and I'll merge this later once you have more input

    thanks:)
