PS3 Blinking Red Light of Doom

My PS3 has just had it's first episode of the blinking red light, it's one of the original 60GB PS2 compatible ones so it's had a pretty good run.

My question is, will this be something that will probably get worse? If so, what are my options (other than getting a new one)

So, apparently an official Sony repair will cost me £131 all-in and give me the option of either a 'remanufactured' unit which is identical to my 60GB PS2 compatible model or, if I choose, one with an upgraded hard disk but no backwards compatibility.

Anyone used this in the past?

It's either that or when I get my new iphone, use the money I get from selling the old one to buy a PS3 slim.

You said 'first episode' so I assume it still works fine?

Ive had a couple of runs of this about a year ago. I sucked all the dust out of the vents and not had any trouble since

Nope, there was no warning that it was coming and it is now dead. I'm going to give it a damn good clean and see how it goes but am not getting my hopes up

Yeah, that's what I suspected. Is there any way to transfer my data from the old disk? My last backup was months ago (got a bit complacent I suppose)

Unless the hardrive itself is dead, then you should be able to put it in another PS3, back that up, put the new one in and transfer it?

I'll give that a try but I thought the HDD would only work with it's original PS3.

the harddrive is simply a 2.5inch hard drive from a laptop.
if it's compaitble with the ps3 then it'll work.....it'll work in any ps3.

Don't swap the harddisks around - automatically the new PS3 will format the harddrive when a new one is inserted. Try pressing the power button down and holding it down until you hear three beeps, it will then reset. Hold down the power again for 2 beeps (i think it was), it will forces the PS3 on for a short while - hopefully long enough for a back up. Google it to be sure, or ask playstation (they are quite helpful).

I thought it would so have been a bit reluctant to try. I'll give your idea a try.
