Lost a hub cap on Hertz hire car

So I rented a car from Hertz for the day. Just reached home after a day out with the car, seems I'm missing a hub cap.

Could have been stolen while the car was parked during our outing, could have fallen off (didn't hear anything though), I really don't know.

I bought Hertz's CDW, Theft Protection (TP) and Super CDW at the time of rental. I was advised verbally, at the time of rental, that this limits my liability to zero for "everything", except the wheels / tyres.

On reading the Ts & Cs given to me, it says, in relation to Super CDW:
If you accept Super Cover (SC) by paying the daily premium specified your liability for the non-waivable and non-refundable excess in relation to CDW and TP will be reduced or eliminated depending on the rules applying to SC from time to time. SC does not cover wheels, tyres, fuel contamination or keys.
Now, there's nothing wrong with the wheels nor the tyres themselves - just a hub cap that's missing.

Will Hertz make me pay, do you think? I'm returning the car tomorrow morning.

I guess you will never know until tomorrow when you return it, though you can just purchase 1 wheel trim from the main dealer

I had to do this for a 15" Wheel Renault Megane and it was about £17 all in with the Vat.

See what they say tomorrow, and offer to purchase a wheel trim on monday morning, with a view for it to be delivered tues/wed at the dealer.

Failing that, have a look on eBay tonight and see if anyone is local etc, but it needs to be in a new condition otherwise they will just think you have bashed it up.

    Thanks Alias.

So you think there's a chance I might be liable for the hub cap then, even though I bought the Super Cover?

I'd argue that the "super cover" should cover it because like you say, it's not a wheel or a tyre and is in fact a piece of trim.
  • I'd give the rental office a call first thing this morning and ask them outright getting the name of the person you speak to.
If you are liable nip round to a main dealer if poss this morning and get a new one that way you are only paying for the trim and no penalties.
If you're not liable no probs.

A lot of hire cars I get don't have hub caps fitted.

Take them all off so it all looks the same and keep schtumm.

^^ this crossed my mind actually.

Anyway, I returned the car just before 9am today. The Hertz girl was in the car park as I returned the car. I gave her the key. She asked if everything went ok, I said it did. I asked do you need me to come up to the office, she said no it's fine. She went in to the car and checked the fuel level, which was fine, I said goodbye and walked off.

So it wasn't mentioned. Maybe she didn't notice the hub cap was missing (but it was on the front driver's side - can't really not notice it). Maybe she noticed it but new I had Super CDW and so didn't bother mentioning it.

..or maybe I'll just keep an eye on my credit card statement.

In the terms and cons of the agreement it will probably say something like "We reserve the right to inspect the car in our warehouse for any damage"

Keep an eye out on the credit card statement would be the option i would take.

Have a quick drive round the local supermarket carparks and see if you find a similar vehicle.;);)

They wiil take money off your credit card without your consent, the cost of the hub may be 17.00 GBP, they will charge a vast amount more than this, for paper work, loss of use etc, phone up credit card company and inform them that no money from this company is to be taken of your card, do it asap, they are very crafty, I WILL NEVER NEVER USE A HIRE CAR AGAIN, if you read up on some of the reviews on these car hire companies you will see that it is very common for them to just take the money of credit cards at a whim

Stolen...... This is why I have alloy wheels. Some scrote nicks one, that person nicks someone elses, they nick someone else's and on and on and on until eventually someone buys a new one and the cycle is complete.

If you have time, check out ebay... Plently of wheel trims on there from people like me who get sick of the silly wheel trim games and go buy alloys.
