Basic Bank Account with a debit card

Hi
I am looking for a basic bank account with a debit cad but no overdraft or cheque book or anything that could land me in debt!
Any advice? Good or bad? x

I found that both Barclays and Alliance and Leicester I had to make appointments and A&L said it would take 3 weeks to setup.

Lloyds TSB took me in straight away off the street with my driving license as sole ID. They also have an option whereby if you're account gets to £1 they'll send a text so's there's time to put money into the account prior to incurring charges.

Don't forget that were ever you go they'll do a credit check.

Barclays - you can apply there and then - in smaller branches they usually don't need an appointment - they may try and fob you off with a postal form though

Halifax - can apply online easily
  • i highly reccomend barclays went in on a Monday got my debit card on a wednesday
  • I would stay clear of Natwest or RBS, I have had shocking service from these this weekend
I opened a step account got a txt saying welcome to Natwest card on the way also got a letter the Next day saying " your application has been successful, we are delighted to welcome you to Natwest as a step current account holder your card and pin are on the way"

Was impressed with the speedy service till Friday when I rang to find out where my new debit card was was told the account had been closed at branch level and I had to go in to the Branch to reopen the account as it must have been a mistake. Off I went on Saturday morning to the Branch was seen pretty quick, Woman I spoke to was very dismissive basically saying some rubbish that even once the welcome letter and txt have been sent out they do further checks !!!!!! and I must have some level of fraud against me she basically called me a fraudster I was/am furious so I rang back the call center and the guy I spoke to said there was a note for me to ring this number if I wanted to discuss it of course they are only open mon-fri 9 till 5. He did also say the reason for the account closed on his screen said "account conduct" !!!!!! when I hadnt even got chance to get any cash in the account
surely any checks would have been BEFORE an account was opened, I have never heard of more checks been done after a account successfully being opened
