wireless problem

hope this makes sense to someone:
Windows vista,netgear router,aol,fujitsu laptop.

recently everytime i switch the l/top back on the wireless wont reconnect unless i first set it back up using cable and then run a test on the network adaptor via fujitsu`s system diagnostics.

Is the laptop at fault or the router? Is there a solution?
Its worked ok for 18 months ...then...

thanks in advance
John

Hmm have you tried changing router channel?

  • I would if i knew how........
  • What happens if you go start > control panel > network connections > right click on wireless connection > select Repair.

Then open your browser and try to browse to a web page.

This should refresh your connection when switching from cabled to wireless. Sometimes the wireless network adapter needs a refresh like this.

When you say it won't reconnect do you mean that it refuses your wireless key, says there is limited or no connection or just simply cannot find your router?

look under the router it should have some info how to get to the settings page

usually mentions the address 192.168.1.0 or 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.100 you get the idea

it should also give a default admin user and pass (not the same as your wirelss pass)

enter the numerical address in your browser (internet explorer, firefox etc)
username and pass as prompted, then look through the settings, and change wirless chanel (it will be a number between 1 and 11) try changing it to 1, 6 or 11 then find the save/restart router option in the menu, then reboot the laptop and try to connect as usual.

While in there change the wireless password, (choose WPA or WPA2 then pick a passphrase you can remember that is hard to guess nums/letters/caps etc) as if you don't know how to change router settings it is a good bet you left it at default, and this can be a big security risk for others leeching off your wireless internet

Sounds very much to be either a problem with the router's settings or the laptop settings, not a hardware fault if you can ever connect.

Might be worth in windows removing all wireless networks from the list then searching again from scratch,

worst case scenario find the option to restore your router to factory settings and run its usual setup, don't do this if you have any customised passwords or settings on the router set up you won't know how to recreate.
