Hanging basket smoking ??

We've been looking after neighbours cats and fish while she's on holiday and this afternoon OH was sat in our garden and could smell smoke...........he looked over the fence and saw smoke coming from neighbours hanging basket...........no plants in it, just some soil from last year (she's not got round to doing much yet). Now how on earth could a hanging basket start to smoulder like that ? It was a wicker one and I know we've had some hot weather but I've never know this happen before.
Any ideas ?
(I did wonder if she'd put some crystal things in the soil last year and left them in and maybe they'd reacted - but thats maybe me clutching at straws for a solution.)
I would be unstoppable if only I could get started !

Tricky one, could be something to do with sunlight being refracted or reflected in some way. Perhaps a shiny stone in the basket? If it was tinder dry then maybe a small fire could start....
    Intriguing!

Starling trying to nest and used a dog end which they are prone to pick up?

I woder if it just a question of the contents composting?
My compost heap heats up and the contents turn to a white ash, it can smoke if left uncovered.?
    Just a random thought....

Thanks for all your replies...............it is a mystery and suppose I'll never know.............compost sounds most likely along with bird dropping something.
Don't think there were any strict rules about 'only smoke when in the garden'..................lol:rotfl:

I can't believe that a hanging basket could heat up enough to catch fire. Compost heaps have to be a certain volume before they get warm enough to kill weed seeds and that's much cooler than the temperature needed to ignite them.

I think you will find that in most places where it is still practised, one is offered a last smoke before a hanging. ;)
