I lived in a 4 bed house as we all had locks on our doors technically we needed a tv licence each.... As someone else mentioned Iplayer, 4 OD and demand five catch up players are the best and saving you that money!
We eventually brought a tv licence for the lounge because we had an xbox and to have the tv there we needed one.... was also good for the football which isnt the same when its not live!0 -

If you just have a TV to use with your Xbox and you don't watch live TV on it then you don't need a TV licence. The licence is only required to actually WATCH live TV, not to own a TV. Although of course to watch the live footie you need a licence0 -
Hello
yes he will need his own TV licence, even if he is watching online TV from his computer. He can pay monthly by direct debit if it helps him and the TV licensing can help him with that.
Only whilst it's being broadcast - he could use 'catch-up' services like iPlayer to, say, watch last night's episode of Top Gear this morning without a TV licence, but he couldn't have watched it online when it was being broadcast last night.
Personally I wouldn't bother taking the telly and just use a combination of catch-up services and DVDs via the laptop."A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge." - Tyrion LannisterMarried my best friend 1st November 2014Loose = the opposite of tight (eg "These trousers feel a little loose")Lose = the opposite of find/gain (eg "I'm going to lose weight this year")0 -
Please check this but I was told in my first year if I was using a portable TV with internal batteries which wasnt plugged into the aerial slot (aka used its own aerial) i would be covered by my parents licence.0

I dont know if maybe its different for students in halls due to the sheer number of them, but i wouldnt be so laid back about it.
I used to be, couldnt have cared less! Then one day i had a knock on my door from 2 burly police officers. As i had continually ignored threats and requests for payment, i was under arrest to appear before the magistrates.
Luckily it was monday morning so they took me straight to the court, had it been a later arrest i could have spent the night in the cells!
Unlucky for me, they did apologise that the only vehicle available to them that day happened to be a riot van. Nice. The whole street got an eyeful too. Very embarrassing considering they dont know you've only been arrested for no tv licence
Ive never been so mortified in my entire life.Had my partner not been there i would have had to arrange for someone to have my then 1 year old daughter too, and with no family in the area at the time it would of been social services.
A very stressful and upsetting time that is easily avoided, even if it is something we dont agree with.
Just my personal experienceEveryone who thanks me when ive helped will get a 5% share when I win this weeks Euromillions......:p0 -

Your whole post sounds like propaganda for TV Licensing. Under arrest for what exactly? Not replying to letters? Somehow I think that's not an offence.0 -

Yes this sounds very dodgy. Did you watch/record live TV without a licence? And if so did they have proof of this? (the 'proof' could be an admission from you that you watch live TV without a licence) As atypical says there's no obligation for you to reply to letters (unless I think if it's an official court notice) or to let TV licensing inspectors into your house (unless they've got a warrant).0
