cat with a gunky eye what to do?

Hello, my cat has got a gunky eye and shes finding it hard to keep it open. I have checked her eye and there is nothing in there making this happen so i have no idea why its hurting her.

can someone give me some advice as to if it is anything to be concerned about or just leave it and see how it goes for a few days?
thanks

  • Personally if this is a sudden change then I would get it checked out by a vet, eyes are important

Could be conjunctivitis.. I would get it checked out by the vet on Monday if I were you , in the meantime using cooled boiled water and cottonwool balls, soak the cottonwool ball in the water and wipe away the gunk , only use each piece once and then discard.. being careful not to transfer the infection to her other eye..

thank you for replying yes this is very sudden. well she does have the normal sleep in her eye a few times a day but other than that this is very strange.

My cat Eric had conjunctivitis a few years ago and his eye looked a mess, so the vet gave him some cream. Surprisingly Eric let me put the cream into his eye (I was expecting him to lacerate my arms ) so I assume it gave him instant relief.

Good luck and let us know how you and kitty get on.

As an earlier poster said, try bathing the eye with some cooled boiled water, it might ease the eye a bit if you can wipe away the sticky gunk. I wouldn't leave it "stuck up" until Monday - an infection might take hold (sorry, I'm squeamish about eyes).

My Dylan had conjunctivitis when he was little kitten - the vet prescribed some cream and Dylan would hold still with his head stretched up to accept it as it obviously felt deliciously cool and lovely.

If there are no other symptoms then you should be OK to wait until Monday to attend the vet - do definitely take that advice re the cooled boiled water etc, the vet will probably tell you to do that too.

If any other symptoms develop before Monday it would be worth giving the vet a ring to discuss these to make sure s/he is satisfied it can wait. I know it's just the one eye, but excessively weepy eyes can be a symptom of cat flu which would require veterinary intervention.

BTW cats and lots of other mammels can have lots of the ailments us humans can have. Eg I was brought up on a dairy farm and knew from a young age what mastitis was in cows - I was well into my 30s when I discovered humans could get it too.

I think a trip to the Vet is called for, needs cheking out as it could be a number of things, including Chlamydia

Hi hun is she an outdoor cat? It's likely she's been in a scrape or something has gotten into her eye.

Over the years when our cats have had gunky eyes I have wiped them with cold used tea bags. Usually this does the trick but if there is an infection of some sort you will need to go to the vet for antibiotic eye cream.

    Hope it helps :)
