It was ok - but the touts were a bl@@dy nuisance - if you use the sea front cafes and restaurantes every 5 minutes some bloke or other would wonder around trying to sell you watches, or god knows what else, really spoilt it. Would not return0

have been twice , 17 years ago when it was mainly a german/spanish resort and then again 3 years ago , when we went over for a wedding.
last time we stayed in la mata - which was ok , but we were warned not to leave our villa windows open at night - even slightly , as there are so many burglaries.
not really my ideal holiday, but it is cheap and cheerful . my BIL goes every year (with 3 young children)and has not been affected by the crime wave."The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page."
happy travels !!

Returned and the villa had been broken into and everything they had had been nicked.
Reported it to the police and spent 4 hours in the police station doing so. Apart from that, he liked the place.0 -
We've got a place about 50 miles south of Torrevieja. It's not as 'touristy' as Benidorm as it's more a holiday home area than full of hotels. There are acres of these, mainly owned by Brits.
There aren't many attractions in the area - other than the sea. But it's fairly central for getting to places. There is an interesting 'palm forest' at Elche, 35 miles, a great castle at Lorca, 85 miles, a super cathedral in Murcia town, 50 miles, some fascinating history in Cartagena, 35 miles, and a beautiful National Park the Sierra de Espuna, 65 miles. Benidorm itself has all the holiday attractions, 70 miles.
The Torrevieja area does seem to have a reputation for petty crime - not sure why - and the local roads suffer bad traffic jams in the season. But the main roads out of the area are very good.0 -
We were there in July staying at a friend's apartment. I have to say it was nowhere near as English as I had been led to expect (I've worked in Lloret de Mar which is like blackpool compared to Torre!). It's really going to depend jusst where in the town you are as to how it is going to be.
I would not, however, want to spend an entire week in the town. We had a hire care and we were out every day - the beaches at Torre aren't great unless you walk further north or south - and it's north and south of the town that the British ex-pat enclaves are based so you'll definitely find more brits on the beach!
My only other downer in the town was lack of nice spanish restaurants.
It's certainly NOTHING like Benidorm in my opinion0 -
Torrevieja is not a tourist resort, it is a Spanish town. It has in recent years been inundated with immigrants from England, Ireland and all over Europe, with consequent massive building of little boxes for them to live in.
Ali_Uk complains of the lack of Spanish restaurants, well there are plenty of them but its no good asking English people where they are, chicken and chips in the local pub suits most of them, and if thats what makes them happy, why not?
There are two nice beaches, one to the north and one to the south of the town centre, within easy walking distance, a fairground and evening market in the town, you can walk for miles along the promenade or sit at a beach cafe and watch the world go by, and a huge outdoor market every Friday.
Holiday brochures which feature Torrevieja do not actually send you there, but to hotels well south of the town0
