Thanks KB36 we're staying 5 mins south of montpellier, have googled the Gorges du Tarn an hour and half from our accom but a trip would involve the dreaded Millau bridge so we'll see about that we may give it a try !!
Saintes Marie looks nice and only an hour away so wil try it. Heard of Grande Mottes and it was described exactly as you have.

To visit the Gorges du Tarn there's no need for you to actually go over the bridge, just go up the A75, exit at j48 and go through Millau itself (and incidentally get a wonderful view of the bridge as you do so) to get to the gorges. It should only take a few minutes more as there shouldn't be much congestion in the town at this time of the year - July and August might well be different though.

Be careful though, the A75 goes through a couple of tunnels on the way and you have to watch out for the tunnel trolls...........

Joking apart, while you are in that area there's an unspoilt mediaeval village called La Couvertoirade just off the A75 about 25 miles south of Millau. Although still lived in its sometimes used as an historic film set and is interesting to stroll round. It costs to park during the day but not, I believe in the evening. Its on the maps.

I second Sainte Marie de la Mer! We go there every year as my parents live in the Carmargue
