Tasty tomato hunt

Tomatoes bought in the supermarket are tastless lately. Anyone bought any decent ones or got any ideas where to get some from?
Lettuce is the same and I am getting sick of tastless/boring salad.

    Grow some!

You will only need one of those flower buckets that you can get from Morrisons and some compost and of course the plants.

It is perhaps a bit too late to start sowing seeds (except for the lettuce) but you can get tomato plants cheap enough at car boot sales, Wilkinsons or garden centres.

Ditto on the grow your own if you can - I don't like supermarket tomatoes now!

But I have to buy them for pets in the winter... Asda tend to have more British toms early and late season than say Morrisons (who often import from Morocco or Israel) and Asda do a nice baby plum tomato box, reasonably priced. They usually seem very good condition too plus they have a wide range of more specialist tomatoes if you want to pay a bit more.

Waitrose organic Sultan's Jewel are very nice, probably my fave supermarket tomato.

Baby plum tomatoes seem to have more flavour than the other barely ripe ones on offer in the supermarkets. I second the grow your own line, but also remember to keep them at room temperature rather than in the fridge. They keep better and taste so much better than when cold.

    It's only a game

Problem with growing them is I have black thumbs (I can kill anything other ethan weeds or grass) so need a keen gardener for a neighbour!
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)
  • This is a Jamie Oliver receipe. It makes ordinary tomatoes taste great.

    Ingredients
2 1/4 pounds mixed ripe tomatoes, different shapes and colors
Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
    A good pinch dried oregano
    Red wine or balsamic vinegar
    Extra-virgin olive oil
1 clove garlic, peeled and grated
1 fresh red chile, seeded and chopped

Depending on the size of your tomatoes, slice some in half, some into quarters and others into uneven chunks. Straightaway this will give you the beginnings of a tomato salad that's really brave and exciting to look at and eat.

Put the tomatoes into a colander and season with a good pinch of sea salt.

Give them a toss, season again and give a couple more tosses. The salt won't be drawn into the tomatoes; instead it will draw any excess moisture out, concentrating all the lovely flavors. Leave the tomatoes in the colander on top of a bowl to stand for around 15 minutes, then discard any juice that has come out of them.

Transfer the tomatoes to a large bowl and sprinkle over the oregano. Make a dressing using 1 part vinegar to 3 parts oil, the garlic and the chile. Drizzle the tomatoes with enough dressing to coat everything nicely.

This is a fantastic tomato salad, which is totally delicious to eat on its own. It's also great served with some balls of mozzarella or some nice, grilled ciabatta bread.

Amend the ingredients to suit your taste, the most important part is salting the tomatoes over a colander and allowing the extra water to drain away. You get the most incredible tasting tomatoes.

  • The other one I do is Nigella Moonblush Tomatoes

These are great served with a bag of salad leaves (I like a rocket and spinage one best), palma ham, soft goats cheese and a dressing made with olive oil, white wine vinegar and the juice from the tomatoes.

I had some lovely tomatoes from Waitrose recently they were on the vine elegance. Gawd, they tasted just like I remembered as a kid - made you realise why they are a fruit and not a veg :)
