Letting Agent putting deposit into account, then taking it back.

Options
Hi.

I've moved a couple of days ago. When I returned my key to the Letting Agent I rented my previous property through, I asked when my deposit was likely to be returned, and they assured me that they would have the property checked over that same day, and if there were any deductions to be made, they would contact me to discuss this, but otherwise, they would put in my account tomorrow.

Yesterday, the deposit was showing up in the account, but hadn't cleared. Today, the money's gone from my account.

Are they allowed to put money in my account and then just take it back without asking?

Not sure if this affects anything, but I always paid my rent in cash. The Letting Agent have never had permission to take money from my account. I only gave them my bank details on the day I moved so they could pay the deposit into the account.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

They probably paid by BACS which takes 3 days to clear ... and it looks like it didn't clear. Ask the agents whats going on.
