I wasn't in the wrong that the goods were broken!! Yes true I should have the receipt but if the bbq was in perfect order I wouldn't need it anyway..... bit of a viscious circle though isn't it, we're both in the wrong!
Not really, if you had kept the reciept then it would have been solved alot easier. As said before you cannot prove you hadn't stolen it and the business is quite correct in protecting itself.

thanks Googlewhacker! I rang up the store and asked them if they could find a copy of the receipt on their system, she found one and printed it off for me as I could tell her what time we bought it and what till and gave her the card number we used. We are off tomorrow to either have it exchanged or refunded, I know from now on I will have the control over what is shredded in this house!!!0
