Any advice? What should we avoid/look for?
I am a little  at some of the prices but I get the feeling you get what you pay for.
The area I am looking to cover is 17sqm - not huge I know.
Any advice on suppliers?

Just got slabs delivered this week. Went for natural sandstone - although not cheap think they will look great when down.
Used landscapingsuppliesdirect.co.uk. Came earlier than expected and I think were about £10 psm cheaper than local builders - though I could have used their quote to haggle them down.

Depends on a couple of things.
firstly - is it a patio or a driveway? Patio will be fine if you use 50mm (2inch) think slabs. But for a drive you really need 75mm (3inches) thick slabs. The thinner slabs will break before too long if used on a driveway.
Size - if you're laying them yourself, then probably better getting 450mm x 450mm square (or thereabouts) in size because the larger ones eg 900mm x 600mm (3ft x 2ft) normally used in driveways are VERY heavy. Unless you're pretty strong you'll struggle to get it off the ground. You'll be able to "walk" it into position but lifting will probably give you a hernia.
you'll also need to factor in bedding which will probably be more than you think. My patio is only 2.25 x 2.25 (5 slabs in each direction and they're 450 x 450) and I needed 13 bags of sharp sand as bedding.
