Ello everyone, hope you are all having a good'un
Quick question, when you guys go on about a 'PAYG' phone, do you mean pay as you go? I always thought it was some miraculously cheap tarriff or something?! Ha!

Pay As You Go - PAYG

Hi,
It just means paying for credit as and when you needed it, rather than being tied into a contract.Debt at highest: £6,290.72 (14.2.1999)
Debt free success date: 14.8.2006 :j0 -
T mobile do 12p a minute to any network. You would need to use 145 mins to reach the £17.50 a month of a normal contract phone..0

A similar question...
When you switched to payg from contract, did you stay with the same provider? Did you manage to keep your number - Seeing as I barely use the phone these days, I'm seriously considering swapping, but don't want the hassle of changing numbers...FWLBM - 1st Sept 06 - Debts: around £80k (not entirely sure...:o )0 -
You can take your number with you
Even across networks and call plans etc
the choice is yours

I think you can usually keep the same number - sometimes there's a few days delay in switching the number over etc and I think some companies ask you to pay a small fee. I guess you'd have to ask whichever company you're with. Someone correct me if not, but it might be possible to keep your number even if you move to payg with a different company... worth checking although I could be wrong. That would leave you free to choose whichever payg is cheaper :T
Perhaps the very knowledgeable people on the telephones board will be more help! take everything i say with a pinch of salt!!
Edit: ah, I see tine has answered the question properly, thank you:cool:

payg is much much better than contract, especially for people (like me) who never ever uses there phone its much cheaper, but saying that if someone is a chatter box/has a business contracts are good, its swings and roundabouts really.....
btw i have gone from contract to payg (on orange) and kept my number, but i am now going from orange to vodaphone and i dunno if to keep my number or not....0 -
I changed from Orange to EasyMobile PAYG. Calls 15p cheaper and txts 5p cheaper. Also got a tenner free + another £5 when I told them I was refered by somone on this board. The referer also gets £5. Only thing is I think you must use £5 every month or get charged 75p per month. Its still a cracking deal, monthly bill down from £37 to £21

Contract is also better if you have family or friends who don't have a land line. I found payg much more expensive for making calls to people who have mobiles on a different network than mine. On my contract I have x-network mins included so it doesn't matter which network my sisters and my ex are on (they all seem to jump from network to network every 5 mins, where as I have been with o2 forever!)0 -
very true looby, i think you have to look at how much you use etc etc and who you phone etc etc, when i took up my contract i was still in college so was using it very much (nearly to the max) but in the last 6months i have hardly used it
i think people who take on contracts need to think about it, not get cornered in a shop and then tied in for 12/18 months (as you wont know how much you would use till a few months in after your cooling off period)0
