American fridge freezer?

We are currently planning a new kitchen and just wondered if anyone has experience of American style fridge freezers.
Our present fridge is too small. Everything needs to be kept in fridges once opened now, jam, pickles, tomatoe sauce etc etc. Our current freezer is in a spare room and I would like to have one in the kitchen.
Ive looked at these American big boys and I wondered if anyone knows of any that dont need plumbing in?

We have owned a huge Whirlpool American fridge freezer for 4 years and love it. Ours is plumbed in and has a built in filter so we get nice pure water and ice whenever we want it. Reliability isn't great but we took out 8 years parts cover which has proved invaluable. The best bit about our model is that it is completely frost free. It never needs defrosting due to a really neat air circulation system that kicks in whenever you open and then close the door of the freezer.
It is worth checking out the fridges on offer at Costco if you or a friend have a card. They do some great prices.

Any of the American fridge/ freezers that have ice & water on ttp should be plumbed in. Theoretically you can buy a minitank you fill up and use to feed the supply for water only, but it would take up a lot of room inside.
Iv'e got the Samsung one and love it. My sister bought the model without the ice & water as she didn't want to lose freezer space, that doesn't need plumbing in.
Search the online stores for deals they are a lot cheaper than the high street stores.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages, student & coronavirus Boards, money saving boards. You may want to have a look at the Fisher & Paykel E522, it's different in style then the side-by-side freezers but it is larger in cubic litres terms.
They are extremely well made, a bit of premium brand cache and I think they come with a free 5 year guarantee at the moment.
We have owned one for about 4 years and it has been a great machine, coincidentally, we're getting a new kitchen and looked at the side-by-side machines too.
Having looked we have decided to just get another F & P like we have in silver, hopefully we can sell our white one for a decent price, as it si way too good a machine to sell for pennies.0 -
I've got an LG one, and I love mine too! Got it quite cheap from Comet. For some bizarre reason, it was cheaper to buy the silver one, which had the icemaker/water dispenser, than it was for the white one with neither. Hadn't anticipated getting this, and didn't think we'd use it, but we have, loads. It's great having ice and cold water instantly available - even our neighbours come in to get some! Mine is also frost-free.
Try the Comet clearance site (http://www.clearance-comet.co.uk/)- they often come up there. One thing, delivery on these is often double normal delivery charges because they're so heavy they need extra people to move.0 -
I too have an LG one which I love. It doesn't have an ice dispenser though - it's just American styled. It's a lot deeper than a standard fridgefreezer, so it does extend beyond the cupboards, but I can live with that for the extra space.0

I have an LG one that I got a couple of years ago for about £500 from Currys - bargain, and I was a bit gobsmacked to find Currys was cheaper than the internet but I guess they got a job lot! - and I can't recommend it highly enough. It's so lovely to have a freezer in the kitchen, ice and water on tap and just SO much fridge space. It wasn't hard or expensive to get in plumbed in as they just ran the pipe through the ceiling when fitting the kitchen - admittedly they had the ceiling down anyway - and the filters can be found very cheaply online too (http://www.uk-water-filters.co.uk/water_filters_replace_fridge.html).
I would always want a huge fridge freezer in the kitchen in future, and reading your post reminded me of our dilemma whether to go for it and made me realise how glad I am that we made the right choice for us.

Abbi
PS You may wish to find one with a child lock if you have kids - my mum's has one but mine doesn't and I fear a flood when my toddler twigs how to get the water to come out! Though his 4 year old sister is very good and all her friends love getting themselves cups of water from the fridge.0 -
Is it the need to have someone plumb it in that's putting you off?
Our one came with a flexi pipe, a bit like those for beer in pubs. All you would need to do is bring it behind some cabinets and take the pipe to a bit of plumbing. The pipe is about 5 metres long. Buy a self cutting tap to use on the main pipe and then the flexi pipe just screws onto that in the same way as a washing machine connection.
As other posters have said, having fresh, chilled water and ice on tap is wonderful.0 -
I have just recently had mine in the last couple of weeks. Pity ya didn't post this earlier as mine has just gone back up in price, it was £600 in the curry's sale. It does have to be plumbed in, but it is a very easy job and it is so handy having the cold water and ice on tap.
It's one of the best things we have ever bought!!I live in my own little world, but it's ok as everyone knows me here0
