Chip and pin cards

Don't know if this is the right place to post this but it a bit DFW as it is asked with the intention of saving myself either a bus fare or buying something just to get cash back.
I'm just wondering if it's legal to let someone else use your chip and pin card with you permission
For eg, my dd needs to buy a school bag today and is going shopping with her mates, I haven't got any cash on me to give her there is money in my account (there is no cash machine round here and the local shop has a minimum spend rule for cashback). If I give her my card and PIN no would she be able to use it in a shop?

With your permission, no problem. Though it would leave you open to accusations from the card company over letting someone else know your PIN.
Her actually using it is far easier than with the old signature cards. A 4 digit number is a lot easier to reproduce than a signature ever was.FWLBM - 1st Sept 06 - Debts: around £80k (not entirely sure...:o )0 -
i dont see why not looby, as most children these days have bank accounts (solo cards etc) the only problem would be if she was using a credit card and the shop assistant picked upon it.....my mum know all my pin numbers, its all about trust really :rolleyes:0

Great, thanks for that, I'll send her in with a strict budget and threat on her life if she loses my card (lol she's very responsible so it should be fine)0

If she uses the cash-point, then it won't be checked at all.
In a shop, if it says Mrs on it it may be queried, plus there is the risk of the chip and pin not working, in which case it may automatically change to a signature transaction.
Solo cards don't have a chip and pin, they are signature cards.A minute at the till, a lifetime on the bill.

Oh I never thought about if the chip doesn't work...hmm looks like she will have to get the money out of the cash machine. The reason I wanted her to use just my card is that the bag she wants is in the sale for £13, if she goes to the cash machine she will have to get £20 out and I have a sneaking suspicion I will never see that £7 change LOL
are you sure about that for solo cards? My I'm pretty sure my dd's HSBC card is a solo one and it has a chip on it. (mine is a visa debit card)0 -
Hi looby, my DH's Solo card is a signature one, maybe they have different types for different customers?
I hope she gets the bag she wants.A minute at the till, a lifetime on the bill.

solo cards do have a chip but some shops chip machine dont work so they have to sign, you can use a chip solo card in many places including asda, morrisons, whsmith, hmv
but where i work they have to be signed for

It might depend on the bank as well. I know for ages my Halifax switch card wasn't chip and pin, I only got one of those when they changed it to visa debit.
She's just phoned me to say that the bag she wanted has sold out but there is another one that she likes for £18 (funny that isn't it LOL) I told her she can have it if she pays the difference out of her pocket money this week (which is £5) we will see what she decides LOL
I know it sounds a bit mean but I was already going over my normal budget of £10 by letting her get the £13 one.0 -
Tell her to forget it and bring the £20 home! I bet they'll find another £12 bag lurking in the storeroom!I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

LOL probably Rog, either way it's still only going to cost me the same because if she finds another £13 I'll have to give her her £5 pocket money on Sat, and if she decides to go with the £18 one I won't. Makes no real difference to me

Nasty mean mother I am:p0
