Let me take a guess; Dell Latitude by any chance?
Either way you need to install the correct video driver or switch to full screen by using fn key + F5 I think?
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

Have you recently reinstalled windows or has this change suddenly happend? If you've reinstalled Windows you may require a driver download from the Support section of the Dell website. If you haven't changed anything as far as your aware it you may need to change the resolution on your PC. Go to the start menu, select control panel, display properties, display settings (may be worded different on different windows versions), change the resolution slider to something higher.
