Anyone who thinks it's correct to fix a slate with silicone is an idiot, I will estimate that water will get through the silicone in a matter of months as there will be no bond between the slates

To me the £80 quote sounded reasonable, but I can fully understand the £150 quote, as if you comply with H+S regulations any ladder work requires two people.

As is anyone who thinks water will get through a slate!

Seems to defeat the whole point of slate roofs (and damp courses)doesn't it :rotfl:

I also wonder how fish tanks remain together with all that water on the silicone joints?

Agree to disagree with andy though

Using a Ladder to get to a height and working there for less than 15 mins wouldn't require two people, its on a single story extentions ie probably 7 ft high, if they guy is self employed. H&S goes out the window anyway. He has a duty to protect others, but he takes his own risks for rewards as he see's fit.
H&S DOESNT make things impossible, you wouldn't construct a house using a ladder, you would use scaffolding, etc, etc.
However replacing a tile, you would use a ladder to gain access, so long as they were suitable and sufficient for the job, inspected, safe and long enough for the job and the right standard and able to take the weight, and the weather conditions were right (ie not 70mph winds).

    3) Ensure healthy pension fund - (Doing)
    4) Ensure house is nice, suitable, safe, and located - (Done)
    5) Keep everyone happy, healthy and entertained (Done, Doing, Going to do)

he got 25 quid cash, though i m ''certain'' the one who quoted 150.00 would put in on the books !

as a plasterer of 20 years, many times im told im ''too cheap'' whne i quote a reasonable 380.00 to skimm a room, though with speed and knowledge i can easily do that room and a bit more on my own and still be home by 5 pm!
Just wanted to say , some times some traders make such a big fus out of nothing .
i rendered 3 chimneys last week and i knew i would have to replace broken tiles...broke 8 of them as no scaffold provided and no way how to provide it it was a v-shape roof took me 30 mins to replace slate tiles properly and charged 80 quid for it...and that was a thing that i hadnt done before.

for such a small job(1 tile) , who ever came there with the intention to just quote was a muppet! its a small job and i would probably tell the woman on the phone how much would i charge for it.. just take a bit of extra risk - its just a tile !!!!!! not a cutting edge, rocket tile
