Dog harness solution please! He gets out of his!

Options
Just walked my rescue dog who still goes nuts whenever he sees a male dog. Lo and behold he saw one and backed out of his harness and broke free. He used to do this with his collar so I bought a harness. He just seems to back up out of it and break free. Anyway I caught him and got him back under control but does anyone know of a harness that I could get that he won't be able to get out of?
I have realised I will never play the Dane! :(

Where are my medals? Everyone else on here has medals!! :p

    Is the harness tight enough?

When we were looking at dogs and took ours up, they put a harness and collar with lead on them to stop the issue of them breaking free.

Yes I do it up as tight as I can so as not to hurt him. Was it a special harness they put on your dog?

Halti make a harness which clips on to the collar as well, so no way to wriggle out of it. We have one for our rottie and he has yet to make his way out of it lol

No. It was just a bog standard one. The younger dog hates collars and his neck being touched in general. For this reason, my parents decided to get a harness - much easier to put on now - if he doesn't decide to play with it.:rotfl:

A half-check or martingale collar is good to stop a dog backing out, but they need to be fitted correctly to work.

These ruffwear harness are often recommended by a greyhound group for spooky hounds that might try a houndini in a normal harness as the extra strap makes it more secure.

I would 2nd what Hannah IOW has said. It works a treat and it is amazing how easy it becomes to control your dog. Having been physically pulled over by my dog over the years this enabled me to walk him with quite literally, a couple of fingers holding the lead. Now many years later he walks sensibly but for the time he didn't it was a godsend.

  • My Golden retriever is an expert at getting out of his harness. The ruffwear harness that moomin5 suggests is great. I also have Mekuti balance harness which you can double clip. It has several rings so you can try different positions. They offer a thirty day money back guarantee so you can try it out. Mekuti products are designed by a TTouch practitioner and so are particularly 'dog friendly'

I have just purchased the harness moomin5 suggests, if your dog could get out of that he should on telly.

It was hilarious trying to figure out how to put it on my boy so I don't think he would get out too easily. There is a piece that goes down between his front legs with a loop on the end which the front belly strap goes through so unless his front leg is triple jointed he wouldn't get out, I know this because I didn't realise the strap came out of this bit and tried putting his leg through and then trying to get the rest over his head :o. Lad was not amused with all the contortions, especially when his back legs are failing him. There is also no need for a collar as there is a clip on the back for the lead.

Another vote for Mekuti harness - it's great, and like robbles says, is dog friendly too!
