Computer has reset itself

My computer has gone back it seems to its original state in many ways.
Desktop background is the original one, the homepage on internet explorer was back to the original one and I don't have any favourites left in my list on I.E.
My cookies have gone and the address history in the drop down list has also reset.
I still have programmes that I have installed since I got the computer.

Does anybody have any ideas on what has happened here - I didn't ask it to reset to a safe previous setting or anything along those lines.
I note my son has been using Microsoft Instant Messenger again (despite me banning it after previous problems when he had used it - nasty stuff left behind and changing home page etc). That could be coincidence as my Ex. said she has no problems when he uses it on her PC.

Oh and while I'm after advice, I'm not able to install an update for Microsoft Office which it seems is needed to stop Internet Explorer freezing sometimes (I use Works package rather than the full Office prog in any case).
I downloaded the required update from Microsoft but they won't let me install it until I put the "original installation disk" into the PC. Problem is I don't have an installation disk as the software was preloaded.
I had someone round a while back when I had something playing havoc with the PC and he had said to me that the software might be in another drive on my PC ( I have a back up and a recovery drive).

In recovery drive it has a folder called RECOVER and in this are a list of things named FACTORY.002 FACTORY.003 etc - is it going to be in one of these?

just tried to open one an it said windows did not know what created it and would have to go online to find a programme to open it.

Internet Explorer took me here http://filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=002

as it didn't recognise the file name. I'm afraid I'm as lost as ever on this one, Help.
