The main problem for this person is they are a single parent. So it is a lot of organising childcare etc when they have to work away.

They have been working at the place for about 4 years now and this is a recent change.

If they had to go to the London office in the past, AFAIK, work bought the train tickets, any time over the regular working day was paid overtime? They would probably get an early train, say 8am, get to London about 10-11??? Then leave early, say 3pm, to get back to Leeds, say 6pm??? I don't know the exact travel times, I have never had to travel like this in my work.

The comments along the lines of, "tought t1tty", that would be ok if you took the job on under those conditions, but like I said this is just a sudden change, and a pretty major change at that.

Like you said, if you had to get up at 4am to be in a London office for 9, then not getting home til late evening, it is going to cause a lot of hassle in childcare alone for this person.

I can't really comment too much about it, because like I said it's just a friend, but I will pass on all of this advice.

From what you say it certainly looks like a substantive change of contract to me, if its not a one off. However, I am not an expert in this, its probably best to speak to trade union or ACAS
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast
