My Mum got an automated message telephone call yesterday afternoon at 17:40 and again this morning which was supposed to be from Barclaycard. It stated that they wanted her to contact them on the following telephone number 00442071506686. They did provide a 0845 number but I didn't get it wrote down in time. The telephone number which called her was 08453512259. Is this a scam or is it real?

I have googled it and some say it is real while others say it is a scam.

It is Barclaycard fraud department. If you put the number in here without the 0044 which is the international number and add 0 making the number

02071 506686 shows as BC Fraud department. She should really give them a ring

the 0845 number that rang her also shows as BC fraud department.

If she's unsure, call the number on the back of the card so she knows it's legit. Might make her feel better about calling.

It ended up being a genuine call.

If my bank calls me (only happened a couple of times), I've always informed them that it's up to them to prove who they are to me. As they're unwilling to give me my memorable name or whatever, and I'm certainly not giving it to some stranger on the phone, we tend to reach impasse fairly quickly. I always call them back, via the telephone banking number. Better safe than sorry...

When I've had calls from Barclaycard's fraud department it's been an automated system that plays back a list of the last few transactions and asks me to confirm whether I recognise them. On the one occasion that I indicated that I did not recognise one of the transactions, I then got put through to a human to deal with the fraud.

I've had a similar automated thing from Santander too. MBNA called once, but it was straight through to a human.

Yes, I've had exactly the same with Lloyds TSB. I had one call *from* a proper human asking about my account, but I said I wasn't sure about talking to him without establishing he was from the bank. He didn't mind at all, in fact he suggested I call back to the number on my card.

Turned out to be legit, but you can't be too careful :D.
