Hi all,
Does anyone know how much it would cost (labour only) to replace a mixer shower?
We currently have a Mira 88, which we just found out, is not compatible with our new combi boiler system
TIA

Depends on whether the job needs a plumber/sparky or a handyman can do it. Call them.0

a like for like swap should be about 50 quid in labour.Get some gorm.0

It won't be a like for like shower as we have to upgrade to one that is compatible with our combi boiler.
I understand the work will involve having to remove tiles from the walls of the shower, then fit the new shower and make good the walls again. I doubt this will be 50 quid job.0 -
A Mira 88 is a mixer shower but is not thermatatic, It needs to be manually adjusted. This would still work with a combi but the risk of scalding could occur
Removing tiles, replacing valve, Patching walls and pipe work to suit new valve then seal and tile
As a a estimate i would quote around 1.5 days work £300 labour, Shower mixer (branded) upwards of £200+vat, Basic materials £30-£50
I quick suggestion if the shower is mounted over the bath(does bath and shower function)

Fitted with pillar elbows,(£40) would save trying to fit a new valve in wall which when retrofitted never look perfect!!Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure0 -

Thanks for that Andy!
I spoke to Mira customer services this morning as the plumber who installed the boiler is happy to fix the shower if I get a hospital kit myself from Mira, I just wanted to make sure I bought the right stuff.
After explaining to them that we upgraded our boiler, they said model 88 is not compatible with combi's as it won't be able to cope with the higher pressure. The problems that might occur are: the shower head may start dripping, it may become impossible to turn it off completely and the knob may become very stiff. Well all three of these issues have actually happened, which is enough to convince me that a brand new shower is needed. I was told we could get a hospital kit as a temporary measure but the problems will reappear. I see no point in doing that. £300 labour seems reasonable to me and a basic Mira model costs under £200 (Element or Discovery were recommended by them)
Unfortunately, the shower is in a separate cubicle, not over the bath. Good thinking though on your behalf.0 -
my mixer valve is surface mounted and would take me less than an hour to change.Get some gorm.0
