I had a round cover on my property (the drive) and one day for no apparant reason it was broken un half. Found out that as its on my property I am responsible (like if you ahve a blockage its yours!) so had to replec it. To be honest it wasnt worth claiming on the insurance as i had an excess to pay and it didnt cost that much.
  • I suggest you measure it up and visit your local builders/plumbers merchants - don't usually cost very much!

Unless it has the utility's name ( or specifies the service like 'WATER' on it, it's yours.

You will be reponsable for the manhole/drain cover, and you will not be able to claim on your insurance, unless you have accidental cover and a good imagination;)

Lift up the lid and try and see why it is sinking, if it is just the top frame, easy to lift and rebed .

Unless the cover is on Public highway you will be reasonable! However sometimes sewers may run accross private land meaning the local water authority will maintain it!
Its 95% that its yours but you never know!
  • i think most sewers run across private land at some point but water companies will only repair the point in the road until it meets your house then its your responsibility-unless its a section 24 which means the house must have been built before a certian date-ubure of the exact date but think its something like 1937
