Help - noisy loo!

My loo has been making a noise for a while now, its sounds like its filling up all the time, and the water is moving as though its trickling constantly into the loo itself although the water leval stays the same.

It must be a commen problem as I have just returned from holiday where the loo in my hotel room started doing the same thing!

Can anyone please tell me how to stop it? It driving me mad!

Many thanks!

Sarah

Firstly, have you noticed any damp patches/dripping below the cistern overflow pipe first thing in the morning?

Secondly, before you flush the toilet tomorrow morning, lift up the cistern lid and see if the water level is up to the overflow pipe. If so, does the ballcock seem to have a leak in it? If not, the washer may have gone at the other end of the rod connected to the round ballcock float. It can be adjusted with a couple of sets of pliers/wrenches. Hopefully you or a friend can sort it our - it's not rocket science.

    possible causes:
Ball valve sticking due grime deposits in cistern
Ball valve washer mishaped or damaged
faulty syphon washer - if the toilet is "flushing" constantly (this would be in conjuction with one of the other two)

When ours did this. There was a little nut on the right hand side in the cistern near where the ballcock ajoins this needed tightening.
