When you go on JSA you can only study if it is less than 16 hours a week and classed as a part time course as you need to be available for work and you aren't classed as being so if you are studying full-time

  • I had to do the same last year, when my daughter turned 12 and I was already doing a college course. They gave me a date at my interview that payments would change over to JSA, and explained how everything would then work. There was no problem with my completing my college course as it was a work based course. So discuss it with your adviser when you go in to see them. My adviser was really helpful, and when I did get a job interview and then a job she was fantastic and helping to sort out all the things I was entitled to. :)

You get different treatment as a single parent on JSA, as they do not expect you to work full time, and understand you have commitments. They were happy for me to find work part time, and did not try t push me to apply for any work that would not fit around my commitments and circumstances.

You might qualify for the ALG if you're studying.

    Probably immediately.

ALG is the adult learning grant, the adult version of EMA. http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/educationandlearning/adultlearning/financialhelpforadultlearners/adultlearninggrant/index.htm

wow, I can't believe that people are so judgmental towards somebody who wants to get a decent job. Surely it's better to study to get a well paid job than take a crappy job and have to claim tax credits etc and be unhappy ?
Anyway, it's rubbish that it takes years to get to the point of being able to earn. There are access courses available which take one year and prepare you for uni, as I imagine the OP knows perfectly well.

To the OP- I don't know about claiming as a lone parent while being at college. However, I would like to say good luck and I hope you get through your course and onto the MW degree course.

ha ha iv already been to college had a interview and waiting to find out if iv been accepted you are so judgemental on things you ant got a clue all i wanted to know was when i would be swopped onto jsa and i have more than the basic education thank you

good luck with your future hun, its nice to hear of someone doing something with their life and not waiting for it to drop in their lap.
i am sure there is a reason, but it is beyond me, why when someone comes on here asking a simply question, they can't just get a simple answer without being critizised. none of us know this ladies circumstances and the reason why she has had a period of time not working but looking after her daughter thats her business she wasn't asking for an opinion, just an answer.

Is it an access course you're looking at?

If so, you may be better off doing it part time and working 16 hours alongside it as you will be better off on WTC.

I'm not sure it is an option for you while claiming JSA.

Hopefully the advisor will know all the options.

Once you get to HE level, you will have student finance so will be better off.
