free photo editing software?

was wondering if there was any free software out there which i could use to lighten some photots?

they were taken at a party, and no one put the flash on so they are a bit dark. some of them are great shots and it would be a shame to waste them.

I use Picassa because it is so incredibly easy to use. Adobe PhotoAlbum is also free and I tried that. Again easy to use and some features are better than Picassa, but overall I settled on Picassa.

Its amazing what some software can do to pics. I took some recently where the flash didnt work too well and you couldnt see what the picture was of but when you lightened it with software its like magic!! I use MGI photosuite as im so used to it and have used it for a long while. Im sure there are better ones but its what im used to.
