So there was a problem you spoke to them they corrected it. How is that a rip off?
As Trumpton has said my original post was a concern that this was a rip off on a vulnerable oap and it would have gone unnoticed had I not perchance found out about it. Yes they have corrected it - but only after a) discovery on my part and b) intervention on my part. If you sign up for membership to anything you would naturally expect it to start from the point of signature - not unexpectedly assigned to a date of six months earlier when you have never had any use of it. Had I not noticed the Sept 2010 date on my mother's card I would have been none the wiser and she would have been scammed out of six month's worth of membership! I put this post out as a hopefully helpful warning to anyone else who might sign on to the NT to be extra vigilent as to how they deal with their subscription - especially if they have ever been a member before.

Your post and thanks count are quite amazing. :D

I don't understand why this is worthy of particular comment as it's not something I ever note, but perhaps an explanation might be that I occasionally post in the competitions forum and one post there may glean 700+ thanks from regular viewers...

If you join the New Zealand equivalent, which is cheaper, you can get into UK NT properties free by flashing your card... worth checking out.

I've never joined the NT as it's a rip off for single people. Same with the Ramblers.

Because if the OP hadn't picked it up, it would have gone unnoticed. It's a warning to others to check that they don't renew your old membership from it's expiry date, instead of starting you off as a new member. We have had lots of admin problems with the NT too.

Yes but its still not a rip off its an error which they corrected. What I debate is using such terms as rip off when the organisation ahs made a mistake which is rectified when pointed out.

A Rip off implies they are going out to rip people off which there is no evidence of.

Same here. You do have to badger them a lot. When I moved house it took 3 emails, 2 letters and 3 phone calls for them to update my address. Even when they updated it the NT magazine/book etc kept being sent to my old address. They told me that the mailing list system takes 6 months to update so I'd have to get the people living in my old house to send the post on!

It WAS a rip off and there IS evidence.

NT sold membership which commenced on a date 6 months in the past. Rip off.

NT sent out a membership card which showed they'd done this. Evidence.

"Rectified when pointed out" - or rectified when caught out!

Better to write than telephone. Apart from the cost of the call the NT Customer Service staff are some of the rudest in the country.
