NationalGrid Metering - didn't show

I received a letter through the door a couple of weeks ago stating that National Grid will be exchanging our Gas Meter today, 03 June, and that access to the property would be required even though the meter is outside the house.

It's now 16:46 and I have been at home all day, when I should have been at work, and still there is no sign of an engineer.

I have called their number - 0845 606 6766 and followed the number-pressing route to a recorded message saying something along the lines of "We know you are expecting an engineer today and we thank you for your patience". That's it - cut off, no chance to speak to someone in person.

What a bunch of bandits.

it could be that the engineer has been pulled off Metering work to deal with an emergency if there is a lot of emergencies been reported.

So until you actually speak to someone save the insults until you know the reason. You could of course call your supplier who would have asked National Grid to change your meter on their behalf and ask them to find out what has happened
I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.

Phone your gas supplier and advise them that you were given an appointment by National Grid Metering (NGM). That appointment has been broken and you are entitled to a fixed sum of compensation. I believe its £30 for a broken metering appointment.

Lemontart is correct that there may have been gas emergencies to be dealt with as an engineer completing work for National Grid Metering may also work for National Grid Gas attending gas escapes.

National Grid Metering are a Meter Asset Manager (MAM). There are other MAM's out there that do not rely upon emergency service engineers to complete their planned metering appointments and as such I would never accept the excuse that emergencies take priority.

You were given an appointment, the appointment was broken and you deserve to be compensated for taking the day off work. Remember your contract is with your gas supplier, not NGM. NGM manage the asset (gas meter installation) on behalf of your gas supplier. You can also request a morning or afternoon appointment when you decide to re-plan the visit.

    Hope this helps.

I think you missed the line that read, "recorded message... cut off, no chance to speak to someone in person." That alone justifies the tag of "bandit" IMO.

If they were attending to an emergency, how much effort would it have taken for a desk jockey to get on the phone and let me know?

In fact, I managed to speak to someone at NGM by using another, very circuitous route on the number menu, and the response was that the engineer had visited at 15:40.

So let me revise: LYING Bandits.

I have to agree. If they are only going to leave a useless recorded message, it would be more honest not to provide a phone number.
