Hi Guys
Just a quick question , my wife's eMac has died a death, looks like the monitor has gone and i'm pretty sure that's not cheap to sort !!
We we're gonna put it on ebay for spares or repair , but she wants the data from the Harddrive first, is it possible to connect it to my Windows laptop and simply transfer the data ???, they both have a USB port, so is it simply a case of getting a USB - USB cable and will it recognize it ??? surely can't be that simple !!!!
If not then how would I go about doing it, and also how would we go about making sure the harddrive is formatted so no-one can retrieve the data from it after we sell it ??

I think you are right it can't be that simple, sorry.
If the data is in a format that is Windows compatible you will be able to open it on a windows pc for exampla a word document or an excel spreadsheet.
Do you have an external hard drive or a usb key to collect the data, although you will struggle if the screen is blank to be honest. Can you connect another monitor to check the diagnosis? and to show the files you want to retrieve?0 -
Can you plug an external monitor into it.. not a mac expert myself.. failing that, the only way would be to find someone else with one, and swap the hard disk, then copy to usb stick, internet, CD, disk etc..
Assuming it is a standard hard disk, stick it in a windows PC, and use one of these to wipe it 7 times:

ISO for burning a bootable cd)

The E mac has a mini video out port. You can conect a standard monitor to this and copy data ( photos and docs etc ) to an external drive - hard drive / USB drive etc plugged in to a USB socket.
You can then transfer the datA to another Mac.qui tacet consentire -
