Laptop 'freezing' all the time - please help!

EvilScotsman - I can sometimes get the blue screen offering task manager but it never actually opens it, other times it just freezes completely...0

I suppose the problem is knowing if it actually is Norton causing the problem...
Remove both 2009 and 2010 versions with the link I provided
No freezing means its definitely Norton (Which im pretty sure it is)
It doesnt mean you cant use it, I suspect its because 2009 was never fully removed before installing 2010:idea:0 -
Does it freeze if the battery isn't in? When does it freeze?!!
> . !!!! ----> .0 -
Right - Norton uninstalled, still freezes. Battery out, still freezes. Freezes a lot!
I have run the CCleaner, and it got rid of quite a bit.
I suppose I need to do the hijack thingy next....
(Still working through The Grandmaster's link)0 -
Youve definitely run the removal tool for BOTH versions?:idea:0
-
Yep, no Norton left at all.
Just run malwarebytes, all clear.
What next?

Please run COMBOFIX
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
Shut down your anti virus
Follow the simple instructions it gives
Post the COMPLETE log it creates here (Split into sections if need be) ~ if there are loads of 'SNAPSHOT' pages then leave them out
If it comes up with a RENAMING error then RIGHT click the exe file and RENAME and call it QWERTY (Making the complete file name 'QWERTY.exe') Or SAVE as 'QWERTY' on download
(If no log comes up or you lose it, COMBOFIX.TXT can be found in C drive):idea:0 -
You could try installing Who Crashed to see if it can identify a driver that's causing the problem:
http://www.resplendence.com/whocrashed
Could be bad memory - if you're not confident removing one module at a time to troubleshoot it you could download and run Memtest: http://www.memtest.org/#downiso
If the freezing happens several minutes after booting up the laptop is could be overheating - SpeedFan may help diagnose this: http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php
Make sure your computer is up to date with all of the latest updates from Microsoft Update (not just Windows Update).
It could be a problem with the hard drive - right click on the C drive, choose Properties, Tools tab then click on Check Now beside Error-checking.
Failing all else reinstalling the Operating System is an option; if the problem continues it's definitely a hardware problem and if the problem goes away it's a software one.Offical MSE Fantasy League Member :footie:0 -
Have tried to run this but despite allowing it etc nothing happens - just a white screen. Tried twice now...0

EvilScotsman - I have looked at the links you gave but they all seem a bit complicated for a technophobe like me - are they easier than they look?
How difficult is it to reinstall the operating system? Is it beyond a non-techie like me?0
