Low Cost Vets - Reading Area

Wondering if anyone can help, I have two nine week old male kittens which I will need to neuter further down the line.

I started to ring round vets in Reading for a price, my sister just had her kittens neutered in the Midlands for around £20 each, I'm being quoted between £40-£50 each!

I understand the cost of living in the South is more expensive, but that is ridiculous.

Can anyone offer any advise, or a decent priced vets?

I don't mind travelling as far as Didcot with them, but any further and I think it would be too much stress for them.

I understand having a pet is expensive, and can afford the higher cost if required, I'll just start putting by now, but just wondered if anyone knows of a decent priced vet in my area.

Or anywhere that is giving money off the cost on neutering, jabs and microchipping if I have them done all together?

All help most appreciated :o

To be honest, £20 seems very very low - £40 or £50 seems much more normal!

Ditto! £20 is extortionately low! It makes the rest of us look like money grabbing but everywhere i've been around £40-50 is really the norm

Ok good to know, if anyone knows of any pets in Reading doing multiple proceedures for a discounted rate let me know. As i'd like to get there jabs and micro chips done too. I was quoted £70 for the jabs per cat, and I can't afford all that!

Completely agree that around £45 is the standard price - remember it's a full general anaesthetic, and while it's a routine procedure you still need careful monitoring, proper sterile operating conditions to reduce the chance of infection, etc. There is a lot of variation in the cost of vaccinations and microchipping; you can get them vaccinated more cheaply if you don't have them done for feline leukaemia, just flu and enteritis. Have you considered the cost of treatment should one of them become ill? That can easily be several hundred pounds if something serious happens, such as a road accident. If finding that much money would be a problem for you, it might be wise to think about insurance.

I have just paid around £80 for first 2 sets of jabs, worming and micro chip for my 3 month kitten. Remember that the cheapest price is not always the best choice. This is the beginning of a 'relationship' with a vet practice and taking a cat to various different practices just to get the cheapest price at this stage may not be the best policy. My vet now 'knows' my cat, and if - heaven forbid- she needs more extensive treatment or OOH appointments, I know she will be well cared for.

There is a "Vets 4 Pets" in Newbury. I don't know if that is too far for you, as I use the practice in Barnsley, Yorkshire. But they are very reasonable and the service is excellent, and really seem to care about the animals (which is more than can be said for other practices I've used).

£35 for cat castration and £48 for a cat spay at our vets, in West Midlands. £20 does seem very cheap, did your friend have a Cats Protection voucher?

My friend uses these people and always seems to get things done for less money than I pay at my vets

Various branches around the Reading area ie. Caversham, Woodley etc.

She always seems to have a money off voucher for something or other....
