Making money whilst being a student

Options
Hi,
Im a 16 yr old male who is about to start my a-levels in september, and I was planning on getting a student job for evenings / weekends, however, when results came through today, I changed my mind, due to an a in maths (GCSE) , so now im taking bio, chem, english lang and english lit, and maths. THus meaning, im the kinda guy who studies alot, lol, so im worried i wont have time for a new job, which means i will stay in my current job earning 2.75 an hour, making £9 a week (i dnt get EMA - £2000 on the wrong side of the limit! lol). So i was wandering if anyone who, may have even been in this situation, could offer advice on ways of gaining an extra income, from a proven scheme.

Many, Many Thanks,

Matt Langford

I think by now you must be above compulsory school age (although check the link below to be sure as it's a bit wordy) in which case you're entitled to minimum wage of £3.00 an hour.

I worked 5-8pm ish at a local transport company doing data entry/admin work Mon-Fri whilst doing my A-Levels and found it didn't interfere with them. (I did Computing, Maths and Chemistry, plus Physics & Further Maths at AS).

Depends on you and how much time you think you need though. Remember in 6th form you won't have solid lessons timetabled during the normal 'school' day so that will leave you with gaps in which you can study.

You will still have time for a job.. I did hardly any work outside of school time really during A levels.. I worked during my "frees" and on sundays.. I had saturdays and my evenings to spend as I pleased.. which included a job on thursday evenings - I got a job as a cleaner - not glamourous, but it paid £7.50 an hour!

You should be earning more than £2.75.. I thought my job during the summer of GCSEs was bad at £3.

Try to get a Saturday job. Most stores pay around £4 an hour to 16 year olds. You can then spend the free time during the week concentrating on your studies and will also have Sunday free for homework!
  • You will have time even if its only 2 evening a week in a restaurant, or through a temping agency in the holidays.

I did my A-levels in 1 year (did AS and A2 side by side) with a newborn baby as a single parent, and got AAC and I still had time to go out on Friday nights and stuff. Rarely spent all weekend studying unless i had an exam coming up! I used to confine my studying to Mon-Fri and allowed myself the weekend to spend as I like. As a result I was sometimes up til 4am during the week, but I didn;t half appreciate my night out on Friday when it came round!

    and motivation

when you work there it make will you think how much you want a good job
  • I would still get a job if I was you. I worked at the coop during my A levels (still do now :() an was getting around £4 an hour. I tended to do 12 hrs a week split over 3 evenings and that gave me about £200 a month on average (dependent on any extra hours). I stil came out of a levels with great results and got my uni place.
    This is getting addictive! :D:eek:

You are most definitely entitled to minimum wage of £3 and it goes up to £3.10 on October 1st

5 AS levels are hard work but if you're that bright and probably Higher Education bound - basic level works will do wonders for your CV. It shows you can work in a team, motivation etc.
Just don't take on too many hours, especially over Christmas/Easter when you need to revise.

I've just finished my AS year, and worked Sat and Sun which I would say was a little much - one evening and one weekend day would have been much easier so I had one full day free. Just something to think about.

Oh, and if you're doing 5 subjects you won't have free lectures, except lunch.
