along with vista will dome directx10/d3d10.
it will not be directly compatible with previous versions of directx but use some sort of compatibility layer which will eat some extra system resources.
so getting a laptop without a directx10 card may not "last a while" and may not "play most games".
May prove best to buy a desktop with upgrade potential or wait.NURSE: "Shouldn't it be sterilized, doctor?"

Wait untill vista is released before buying or when vista comes out you will need to pay for the new operating system which could cost you about £200 going of the current price or windows XP pro just to use the latest OS it is a waste of time and money it will be cheaper to wait but you could be waiting a long time as no release date for Vista has been set.
Personnally I would buy now use it for a year or so sell it and buy again.
There are loads of laptop want posts on here have a look throught them, most are I want a cheap one but some are wanting decent laptops. you need to set a budget before we can advise we could be going for the top spec alienware laptops when you only want to spend £500.0 -
Far too early, there are still major problems with vista and laptops, in particular the power consumption of Vista with Aero interface running will make the most energy efficient laptop only last about twenty minutes from full charge."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"
