Should I risk weed and feed on new grass?

Hi guys.

As you may have seen from a post a few weeks ago I totally reseeded (overseeded) my lawn. After a week of doing so I had a number of weeds come up which Kay Peel advised me to pick out immediatly if I could. Well I tried and took a few dozen out.

Now 7 or so weeks on I have a lovely new green lawn, yipee! i a m really happy about this as before my back lawn was literally straw.

The only problem is I have loads and loads of clove on it, as well as some dandelion. Now the dandelion I could probably spend a few hours picking it out by hand. But there is no way I can do all the clove.

So I was wondering, would you say it is safe now to put some weed and feed on it? Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance guys, I know I can rely on you for help.

Hi S4lvatore - that's good news that your lawn is picking up.

Personally, I would get a cheap spray bottle of selective spot-weedkiller and zap the individual dandelions and clover.

Spray when it's not too sunny, otherwise the mixture will evaporate before it attaches itself to the weed. Make sure that the weed has got plenty of leaves - not just one or two - and pick off any flower heads before they make seeds. It will take 5 - 6 weeks before the weed dies properly although it will go yellow and wilt a long time before that.

If you prefer organic to chemical, then there are two other solutions:

    1. Boiling hot water from a kettle onto dandelions. Repeat every couple of days. I haven't tried it on clover because they are too spread out.

    2. Hot, neat vinegar on the clover and dandelion. Heat a cupful (in the microwave?) and saturate the weed. Repeat every day for about 4 days.

The cloves are quite spread out. Will the spot killer be safe for this or will it damage the grass?

Normal weed killer, will kill the grass, so get a feed, weed and moss killer for grass and spread around.
    Kind Regards

I'm not sure, but I seem to remember that feed and lawn weed is not recommended for newly seeded lawns or those under 6 months old.

I may be wrong about that. Best to read the label on the back of the box. :o

I'm in a similar situation. When we moved in here the back lawn was completely overgrown and dead and there was nothing we could do with it. So we waited till the worst of the frosts were over, dug the lot up and sowed new seed, which has come up nicely, but unfortunately along with it came about a million dandelions. There was just no way I'd be able to get out all those roots by hand.

What I've done is wait till it's had its first mowing (which was a couple of weeks ago) and yesterday I sprayed it with Verdone. I'll leave it till next week and mow again and see how well it works, but the weeds are already starting to look a bit ill.

I will be pulling as mant dandelion as I can. But the clover is just impossible

Wilko seem to have their own brand lawn spot killer spray for only £1.48, http://www.wilkinsonplus.com/Lawn-Food+Seed/Wilko-Lawn-Spot-Weeder-1ltr/invt/0046817, anyone used it, any feedback or should I just stick to the branded ones?
