hi - 1st time posting on the old style thread though been lurking seems like forever!
as regards to breadmakers - get one definately!! I got my panny after couple of years of procrastinating and not knowing whether the intitial outlay would be worth it.
    It so is!!
we have not eaten shop bread for the last month since breadmaker appeared - reckon on about 30p per loaf.
the difference in taste and the 'smug' feeling you get from not giving your kids all the extra additives from shop bought bread can't be beaten.
I have homemade pizza bases in the freezer ready for those 'can't be bothered to cook days and days out taking a pack up the kids no longer feel deprived of their junk food fix or resent not buying food when we are out as 'ham and cheese tear and share' beats maccy d's any day!
always wanted to post on this board but everyone seems to know so much more and be so efficient i never get the chance - I'm sadly excited now!!

    copied from panny book -
    1 1/4tsp yeast
    550g strong white flour
    2 tsp sugar
    2 tbsp olive oil
    1 1/2 tsp salt
    310ml water
    then put on 'basic dough'

when done roll out into rectangle sheet and scatter with cheese and chopped ham and roll up swiss roll stylie. cut into 1 inch slices and place in flan / cake tin cut side up. more chees sprinkled on top and leave to rise.
    bake 220/450/gas7 for 20 mins.
    tear and share!
    proper grown up lush!

In the long run, does it work out cheaper to make home made bread rather than buying it?

My view is that I can make artisan bread for the cost of sliced bread ;) I use a BM for toast and sandwiches, and handmade rolls, bread, sweet dough when I have the time (most weekends :T ).

I'll add this to the exsitng thread to give you more opinions.

If you are making bread in a BM, do you have to use a specific recipe/ different quantaties of ingredients than if you were making it by hand and then baking it in the oven, or is there a standard bread dough recipe that can be used for both BM and conventional ovens and loaf tins?

Hi, i'm considering a breadmaker of some kind. I was just wondering if it actually works out cheaper with a breadmaker. Surely you just end up spending on bread ingredients what you would normally spend on bread? Or does it work only work out good value if you make a lot- i would probably only make one a week at the most.
    Enlighten me, please:D

In our house it depends who is in when the bread comes out of the breadmaker - if both sons are around then the whole loaf can go along with a pack of Lurpak
