Hi sara,
This thread might help too:
Bread Maker - worth it?
I'll add your thread to that one later as it helps to keep all the replies together.

Baking your own bread certainly saves you money not least because for the price of the cheapest, junkiest white pap of a sliced loaf you can turn out bread of the same quality as one of those posh artisan loaves that cost £1.50+
If you forget the idea of buying a breadmaker you can save even more money by baking your own bread by hand- it's quicker than a breadmakerBake 3 or 4 loaves at once, cool and store in the freezer.

I think thse figures aren't right.
Cost per loaf
SWB Flour 1,5kg is 48p, cost per loaf 16p
Yeast okay 2p
sunflower oil instead of butter (healthier) £2.98 per 3litres. Use approx 25ml so 2.5p
TOTAL 20.5p
Even the basic hovis loaf is now 96p. So this makes a difference of 75.5p per loaf.
I also use mine for pizza bases and for ciabatta bread too. And mostly I don't do regular white bread I do it with seeds, wholemeal etc as I feel like it so it's very flexible
Finally it prevents the 'nipping to the shop to get bread' phenomenon.
And you know what's in it...0 -
Hi sara_501
firstly this is my opinion only, and the way i make my bread (nobody shoot me!)
i bought a cheap and cheerful BM from argos, it was about £25, works a treat. i generally use it to make the dough then bung it in a 2lb loaf tin in the oven or make rolls. if i really cant be bothered i use the BM to do the whole thing.
i know this may be cheating but i buy dough improver from a lovely lady on ebay (much cheaper than the one that Lakeland do) so i dont add salt, butter ect just 500g flour, 300ml warm water 1.5 tsp dried yeast and 25g of dough improver and i have not had a bad loaf yet. even my 3 very fussy kids eat it and wont now eat shop bought!Dear Lord,so far today i am doing alright. i have not lost my temper, been selfish or rude.i have not cursed, whined or eaten any chocolate. HOWEVER, i will be getting out of bed in a minute and i will need a lot more help after that...amen0 -

I love my BM, purchased 2nd hand at a car boot sale!
Makes lovely (if rather heavy and dense) bread and the kids now prefer my home made pizza to bought 1s!0 -
Yes,yes, yes and eh Yes.Best bread I've ever tasted, less salt and cheaper.Nothing beats the smell of freshly baking bread creeping up the stairs first thing in the morning.I got my beloved panasonic on ebay, apparently an unwanted present!!!!"Sometimes life sucks....but the alternative is unacceptable."0

Absolutely definitely worth it!:D I'm another Panasonic lover - had my machine over three years now and it's used every single day. Even though I prefer to use organic flour, organic butter, seeds etc, etc, I still reckon to get a large loaf for less than 50p. The loaves I used to buy were about £1.50 - sometimes quite a bit more. We eat so much bread in this house, I want it to be the best possible quality with the least amount of additives etc and so on grounds of cost and quality (and taste of course:cool: ) I say yay! for home-made bread
