Oh dear.. Thats a long post ! Its getting a bit too deep for my education. But if you have EVER had a credit/utility or even rental serch that is joint, or even they ask.. does anyone else live at the property... this could have caused the link.

When you get your file, have a good look through it and see in the 'associations' section, that should point you in the right direction, if its wrong and you are not linked, then call the CRA and get them to remove that link.

I thought it was only if you applied for a joint account that you were financially linked?

Newly married and OH has bad credit rating which is gradually improving. Does this mean applying for the tenancy to be transferred to joint names will create a link and affect both our credit ratings?

    Hi Mike

I hope that you are still answereing questions, as I have one query that has been bothering me for approx. 5 years.

Here goes, I have always have excellent credit and even now I have 999/1000 score with Experian. I also have a mountain of debt that has been racked up since I married a man who wants everything now, and pays later. He has had debts in the past, and I know that he had a particularly bad time before I met him and did not pay back a loan, which resulted in a CCJ. The house is in my name and I do not have his name on anything at all. I am scared to apply for any 0% balance credit cards in his name, as I am scared that his past debt will find their way to my address and lower my credit score and place me in a bad financial light.

I myself, can no longer get any more credit, firstly because I can't afford it, and secondly because I am up to the limits on all of the cards and I need to start paying back the debt. They also won't lower any interest rates on them, so I would, ideally like to lay off some of the debt in his name.

How do I stand, and would his past blight my good financial standing?

    Regards
    Mia'sMum

    Hi Miasmum,

It seems like you have no financial connection, so your credit file should also state this... If so, then you have nothing to worry about, the fact you have been declined, is as you say you are 'over committed' as they say, horrid term, but when you are maxed out then unfortunatley they will decline you. It happened to me... Now look at the mess I am in !

Has your OH ever got a credit file and had a look, OH should, then you can see exactly whats there, and im sure from that you would be able to see if he can get a card, or if they wont even lend OH a tea bag !

If OH gets the file, you are more than welcome to PM me to see what the opinion could be.

Its not so much joining the tenancy, its more the credit search could be joint, therefore creating a financial link. Sometimes even if you apply for a new electric etc they will ask anyone else in the household... you then could be linked with that as they will search the file.

Thanks for that. Had no idea about that one!
Do Housing Associations generally do credit checks? Any ideas? :o

  • The above will not get you far, DO NOT CALL them, they will have no interest in the credit file issue and will just harrass you to obtain some form of payment, Aktiv are part of the Thames credit group, and are as incompetent, as they are rude (allegedly)

Placing a notice of correction on your file will do little to help, the only way to resolve this is to make a formal complaint to the Information commissioners office, https://www.ico.gov.uk and included details of the letters you have sent, including proof of delivery via recorded post.

Aktiv will also ignore the ICO, at which point the ICO will write to the CRA’s and instruct removal of the data

Thats fair enough, I am aware of Aktive and their hench men, however if OP stays firm and focused on what info OP is after, im sure they would tell you.

I agree the NOC would help little with regard to the quality of the file, but these things take time and im sure the ICO isnt an instant process, it simply adds the explination as to the items being now in dispute.

I dont know really - purley a personal opinion is no... Housing associations take people from all walks of life, what if someones home was reposessed and they wanted a housing !!! home.. Im sure they couldnt refuse if the correct procedures are followed.
  • Hi Mike

Thank you for replaying so promptly. I can get a credit file for the OH but would this also place a credit search with his name against my address. he is on the voters roll but that's it, nothing else.

    Thanks!

    Hiya again... No probs !

It wont place a search on his file, but will certainly create a link at your add, however this will already be there due to the Voters Roll. Again if there is no fianancial link, then you will be fine - 2 separate credit fikles.

When you got your file, was any of your OH's debts on there at all ?

    Hi Mike

    Great thread by the way

I have just applied for insurance opting to pay by direct debit as it was free to do this, do you know if they credit check you when you do this? Concerned as I am trying to get cc on a low interest deal and changed utilities recently and wondering how many footsteps are on my file.

....Also I have applied for cc in OH name as he earns alot more than I do, but he has never had a cc only loans, does this go against you?

Do they credit check partners living at the same property anyway?

    Thanks again
  • No, there was no reference to him at all. I have lived at my address for 17 years and was previously married (17 years ago). My first husband still shows on there from 1989 but there was no reference to my OH now. I'm scared to link his others addresses to mine, in case he blights my credit rating/record.
