Having successfully installed various free security downloads thanks to advice I received on this site, I now search for updates on a weekly basis. I have already updated AVG, spybot and ad-aware. However, I have no idea how to update sygate.

Any advice, please?

Thanks. I've heard of kerio. Is it user friendly?

i find it very easy to use, you download the full version and then after 30 days becomes the slightly cut down version - but you don't lose much functionality.

Think most people here would say either that or ZoneAlarm.

Personally i have tried both and prefer kerio, but one of those personal preference things.

It's always worried me when I've seen Sygate recommended on this board.

This firewall hasn't been updated for a very long time now (at least a year). This has meant that it hasn't been kept up to date with the latest malware, some of which are designed to attack firewalls as well as the rest of your system.

The safest option, especially for security software is to use products that are kept up to date.

I've been using this site for years. It gives a good indication of whether your firewall is doing the job it is meant to.

What these test don't take into account is new viruses or malware (or variations of). If a new virus shuts your firewall down, you won't be protected. Some viruses have been aimed at doing exactly this. This is part of the reason that we see updates for security products. They don't only update virus signatures, they also update their own protection when it's needed for malware designed to disable them. Malware is increasing at an incredible rate. Sygate hasn't taken one single new malware into account for at least the last year (this numbers in the many thousands). This is not the best way to keep your system safe.

    I like the risk....lol :)

I'd advise the non techies to swap to or use Kerio instead of Sygate, very similar look and feel to both of them

Trouble is Kerio doesn't run on OS before Windows 2000 (for those of us still in the computing dark ages).

The Sunday Times recommended Jetico for Windows 98, although they said it was a bit tricky to set up, but I see there that the last version of that to support W98 was released in July 2005.

Gizmo's top picks recommends Netveda, but again says it's a bit tricky to use.

I might have a look at these as I'm still using Sygate.

This got me Googling and I found the following thread on www.wilderssecurity.com asking the same question about Sygate.
