Which gas for a barbeque?

Apologies if this has been posted in the wrong area but wasn't really sure where to post it.
My fiance and I bought our first every BBQ today from Homebase as it was reduced from £149 to £99. However, they didn't have the gas bottles in stock so we went to B&Q but they didn't have them either. So...after some advice from my mum we bought a bottle of gas from our local garage.
However, since getting home we discovered that the BBQ requires Propane and the bottle we got from the garage is Butane. Does anyone know if it is possible to use Butane on our BBQ as for starters, this bottle was £34 cheaper than Homebase's Propane.
Thanks in advance

Butane will be fine. You might have problems if the temperature drops towards zero... but I suspect you won't be using it then.
Probably the biggest problem you will have is that the regulator will be the wrong type. You will need a butane regulator that fits your bottle.0 -
Just a simple case of switch regs. Propane burns hotter and cleaner so I'm told. but butane will do fine.0

You heathens.
BBQs should involve charcoal and food that looks cremated, not an outdoor gas cooker.0 -
Yes you MUST change the regulator that was supplied with the BBQ. Butune regulator is set for 28mbar and Propane will be set for 37mbar.
What you have at present is not compatable.
It could also be worthwhile to contact the BBQ manufacturer, just to be extra safe, to check any jet sizes.0 -
Just pick up a butane regulator off ebay. About a tenner.0
