First home and insurances

Hi there
We are FTB's very close to exchanging on a 3 bed terrace house. We would like to have building/contents insurance and life assurance in place once we exchange. But we dont have a definite day yet, only the solicitor telling us its imminent. I have already got quotes for level term life insurance and income protection through cavendish online and quotes saved from 4 comparison sites for buildings and contents.
Do I apply for all of the above now even though theres no definite day or do we have to wait. I know the answer may seem obvious but as we have never done this before, Im not sure how much notice the solicitors give as to when exchange takes place. If its a case of it could be the next day then Im worried that once I apply for the relevant insurances they may ask for paperwork, id documents, etc to be sent which could then take a few days. I dont want to delay exchange anymore than we have to but then I dont want to apply for things unless I really have to either.
Help anyone, hope it makes sense what Im actually asking?!
