Quick hand crafted items to sell at car boot?

Hi all - my friend is doing a car boot at the weekend and I'm going along to help. Haven;t got much stuff of my own to sell so was thinking of perhaps making a few craft items to take along to sell - obviously they'll have to be quick to make due to the time factor. Anyone got any ideas? Have got loads of pretty fabric around the house, was thinking maybe lavender sachets, something like that? Got to be cheap to make too, as I know people don't pay much for stuff at car boots!

Ideas please:D

  • Greetings cards, handmade chocs? flapjack/cakes
  • I'd go for edible goodies - they tend to sell better than things like lavender bags. Tablet and iced fairy cakes are usually popular. I'm sure you'll find some good recipes over on the OS board.
  • Just a thought.... if you use soya marg and syrup for flapjacks put a sign up saying dairy free as flapjacks at car boots hardly ever are and there's lots of people like me that have odd food requirements!!

Just a note of reality really.

My OH is really into crafty things, especially card making. I should be biased, but hand on my heart they are REALLY good cards. Last time we did a car boot we took some of the cards and some handmade jewellery she had also done. I think she was selling jewellery for 50p and cards were 75p I think. Took quite a bit of stuff and a good selection.

    She sold one card.

Lots of people are making these things now, its readily available. Have a go if you've got the time, but don't be too downhearted if nothing sells :(
  • I'd go for the food option too....homemade cookies/biccies/cakes always go down really well. Individual slices go down well as people buy them for the kiddies while they're walking around. I hit it really well the other week, a lady came along and brought dozens of different cakes/cookies/biccies and said her relatives were coming around at tea time so it would look as if she'd been busy all day lol

I did a car boot the other week and family size fruit pies flew off the stall....how about blackberry and apple pies?...especially good if on a sunday car boot as people take them back for after their roast dinners.

Sadly none of my craft things sell well at car boots (people just don't seem to want to spend any money on high quality ;) hand crafted items :( ) either that or my work is cr** :( I always wait until the christmas craft fayres to sell bits that i've made, like another poster says there is so many people doing the same on the craft front.

    Good luck!!
  • i would never buy home made food at car boots, well unless from a recognised caterer,
could not stand the thought of eating food from a kitchen where you dont know if the cats been licking the counter tops, whether someone has washed their hands after going to the loo during cooking, thats an added free extra I could do without......:o but i guess many people would

My friend's daughter made beautiful cards and tried to sell them on the edge of her mother's car boot sale stall. The cards took quite a long while to make and even buying the bits and bobs in bulk cost 30-40p a card to make. People didn't buy any and the only offers she had were for silly prices like 5 for a pound.

Thanks for all the replies. If I baked the family would wolf it down before I could take it, plus would have to spend money on the ingredients.

Regarding craft items, think its true that people don't want to spend much at a car boot (suppose I'm the same!) - but at a craft fayre same items would sell for a lot more!

    Think I'll save my energy!!
