E-On locked me in afta my cap ended-help!

The story so far - I opted for a capped deal in Summer 08, closing date of cap advertised as Oct 09. When Oct 09 came, I was not sure whether to move or not so was looking. Then I got an email from E-On saying "Thanks for extending your capped deal, this now ends in 2011" Whaaat!!!!

Rang them up n was told I couldn't get out of it. How can this be right?

Wd really like to know if this has happened to anyone else, and if you managed to get out of it.

Do you mean they wont let you change supplier? Or do you mean they wont let you move to a different tariff with them? Or they are charging you if you want to do one of those two things?

I think we most cap deals you had to advise them before the cap ended that either you were planning to change suppliers or what tariff you wanted to go on with your current supplier. If you did neither then you were automatically put onto a new tariff.

You may find your new tariff has a 'exit clause' which means you have to pay to swap tariff or supplier and it will probably be per fuel.

    Hi rosie

This doesn't sound right at all.

If I'm interpreting your post correctly, it sounds as though you were on one of our Price Protection tariffs which ended last October. Probably one of versions 13 to 17.

Alternatively, it might possibly have been the Energy Saver product (versions 2 to 4). These also ended last October.

All customers on these tariffs were offered a similar product going forward. These replacement tariffs protected prices for a further 17 to 19 months depending on the actual product.

They were called either R1, R2 or R3.

Letters were sent informing all affected customers of the change and advising they would automatically be put on to one of these tariffs unless they let us know otherwise.

However, there are no tie-ins or cancellation fees with any of these products. Therefore, I'm really sorry if you were told you were locked in to one of these tariffs.

Let me clarify. If you are on any of the above tariffs, you can change tariff or supplier whenever you wish.

Drop an email to the address in my Profile if you would like me to take a closer look for you. Would be happy to advise further.

A good response to this problem.

I have to say that having an opt out from autorenewal of a tied product is a totally shabby way for any utility to carry on. At the very least, it should be opt-in.

  • Thanks for replying Malc. I didn't get a letter, and when I rang up to query the email I was told I couldn't move supplier, but could transfer to another tariff, which I did. Glad to know that the original advice was not correct.
Will continue looking, cos I'd like the best deal poss.

    Take your point DVS.

However, unless a customer contacts us, we have to put them on a tariff for future usage. The alternative would be to put them on our standard tariff which is also unacceptable to many.

Therefore, when a contracted product ends, we always try and put customers on to a similar type of arrangement to the one originally requested.

I suppose, whichever way we jump, we will not please everyone. The important thing is for customers to talk to us so we can come to a mutual agreement as to what is best for them individually.

    Hello again rosie

Sorry you didn't receive your letter and for being told you couldn't change supplier. As I said before, this is not correct.

I would pop your details on to one of the comparison sites to see all the options available, both with us and other suppliers. Choose the one that best suits your needs.

Just a quick heads up; please be aware, we do not give discount on final bills when changing supplier. Therefore, if you decide to move to another supplier, it will be best to time the move to lessen the impact of this.

Hope this is useful rosie. Again, give me a shout if you need any more advice as will be happy to help. :)
