Just about to start (4pm) on National Geographic (SKY 526) and at 5pm on National Geographic +1...

Yes, it may have been on a few times but there may be some, like me, who haven't seen it yet. It might make some sense of why I was stranded in America for 8 days!

Starting now!

I'm just pleased all flights were grounded when it happened and I'm pleased I wasn't on the first flight back in the air!

ash does not pose as much of a risk as back in 1982 because the modern turbo fan engine runs a higher bypass ratio than the older jets, basically meaning more air goes around engine rather than going through combustion chamber.
by the end of program you will understand what i am going on about,i also like watching air crash investigation not scared of flying it is just nice to know what has bought them down and how the crash made flying safer for everyone.

It's also still interseting to note that Pratt and Witney engines have still not cleared their engines to fly through the lower density ash clouds as other manufacturers such as RR/IAE have done since the policy change a couple of weeks back. Airline operators with P&W engines are still being being re-routed to avoid these areas.
Modern Turbo-prop engines are the least affected of all engines when flying through ash due to their make-up. Long live the propellor !

I am afraid this is not true. As johnnyroper pointed out previously modern turbo fans are not as badly affected by ash as older types where most of the air passes through the very hot part of the engine - such as a turbo prop.
The aviation authorities have made no distinction between types of aircraft engine flying in ash - it was a blanket ban.

I presume all the engine manufacturers are studying this problem. Only one seems to have an actual study in hand, Honeywell. They are studying the engines from two aircraft, one turbo-prop and one turbo fan, which were flown into the ash cloud around the UK to sample the levels of ash. The aircraft were a Dornier 228 and a BAE 146 both fitted with Honeywell engines.
Neither aircraft experienced any problems during their flights !
